More than a Dozen employees at Mountain View, CA have handed in their notice after it was announced that Google are working on an Artificial Intelligence project for D&D.
Codenamed Deep Horizon, the project aims to take the AI behind AlphaGo and apply it to the roleplaying game Dungeons and Dragons. “AlphaGo managed to take on one of the most complicated game in human history, with so many possible combinations it was impossible for the computer to know them all.” AI expert Andy Collins of Iron Fortress Learning said. “D&D is a whole other game and would be a real breakthrough, without prior knowledge of the storyline or options it needs to be able to interact with a human dungeon master and select appropriate responses.”
Employees at Google, Academics and Researchers have wrote an open letter to google. We’ve included an excerpt below.
‘With Project Deep Horizon, Google becomes implicate in the questionable practice of targeted killings of NPC’s and Goblins. These include so-called spell casting strikes that target people based not on known activities but on probabilities of a dice.
While reports on Project Deep Horizon currently emphasize the role of a Human dungeon master, these technologies are poised to become a basis for automated master recognition and autonomous dungeon masters.”
One Google Employee told Gizmodo anonymously “At some point, I realised I could not in good faith recommend anyone join Google, knowing what I knew. I realised if I can’t recommend people join here, then why am I still here?”
Google from their sinister spire have yet to respond.
